About the Object
It is made in the 1700s and was requested by Henry Overton (map seller) for Sutton Nicholls (engraver) to create a map of Yorkshire for him to fill up the remaining stocks of map that his father left him. The map is made out of laid paper and the engraving was done through a process called ‘Intaglio’ which originated from Italy.
Conservation Treatment
Treatment included: surface cleaning with smoke sponges, humidification to flatten the surface using preservation pencil and tear repairs using toned Japanese tissue paper and wheat starch paste as an adhesive.
