Butlins Poster

Conserved by Anastasia Antill

About the Object

The paper poster is printed in red typography in multiple fonts but the main feature is the Butlin’s logo. It was ripped into many small pieces ranging between 45cm to 2mm, dirt and soil sat on the surface of each piece. Many large sections are missing from the poster. The poster was originally 65cm x 100cm but roughly 20 cm of the bottom is missing. This is locally printed advertising poster for the train times for the opening of the new Butlin’s Theatre at Skegness in 1939. (It later became the Gaiety Theatre and has now been demolished)

Conservation Treatment

  • Surface cleaned with a dry smoke sponge and after with water on a cotton wool swab gently rolled in circular motions on the surface.
  • A preservation pencil was used to humidify, unfold and de-crease the pieces.
  • Tissue and wheat starch paste was used to attach each piece together from the back so the conservation treatment would not be seen. The gaps filled with similar paper tone.
  • Now it is displayed in a secured frame.
