Conserved by Anastasia Antill

About the Object
The bowl displays traditional Japanese decorative designs with gilded details over the glaze. The object had previously been repaired after being broken in two before arriving at the University of Lincoln labs. There were also additional losses to the rim and damage to the glaze and decoration. The exposed break edges and bare ceramic fabric had subsequently become heavily contaminated with dirt.
Conservation Treatment
- Dry cleaning was done with a dental tool and simple wet cleaning with water on a cotton swab to get rid of dirt on the surface.
- Missing areas were filled with Crystacal plaster.
- Colour matching was done with acrylic paint to replicate the pattern on the fill and the line repair in the middle.
- The retouched fills were glazed to protect the colour.
